The Christmas dinner table is the one spot everyone gathers around, and it's in every photo. You don't need expensive china to make it special. Build it up in layers and even a simple table looks beautiful.
1. Start with a base layer
A table runner instantly makes a table look styled. Pick a classic vintage Santa runner for a traditional look, or a soft cheesecloth runner for a relaxed, Scandi feel. Lay it down the centre and let it hang over each end.
2. Define each place
Placemats or gold charger mats frame each plate and protect the table. Round, heat-resistant mats are practical for hot dishes. Gold foil chargers add instant glamour and are ideal if you're hosting a big group.
3. Napkins and napkin rings
This is the cheapest upgrade with the biggest effect. Fold a cloth or good paper napkin and add a reindeer, gold leaf or pearl napkin ring. Tuck a sprig of artificial pine or a holly berry pick into each one for a natural touch.
4. Build a centrepiece
Keep it low so guests can see each other. Easy ideas:
- A candle ring wreath around a pillar candle
- A length of artificial garland down the runner, with berry picks and pinecones
- Glass bottles lit with cork fairy lights
5. Add a warm glow
Candlelight makes any table feel special. Flameless LED candles and tealights are the safe choice with children, pets and paper decorations around, and many come with a remote and timer so you can switch them all on at once.
6. Little extras
- Place cards with each guest's name
- A knitted bottle cover on the wine
- A small gift or treat bag at each place
